My first contribution to WordPress was submitting an original photograph of orchids to the WordPress Photo Directory as part of my project, “Nature Around Me.”
Before submitting it, I read the Photos team’s handbook and submission guidelines. I learned about image quality, file requirements, privacy, and sharing photographs under CC0. These resources helped me understand that contributing involves more than uploading an image: each submission also needs meaningful alternative text and must go through moderation.
So far, I have submitted 10 photographs, and 5 have been approved. Preparing the files and writing alternative text in English helped me pay closer attention to both technical requirements and accessibility. I also learned that submitting a photograph does not automatically mean it will be published.
To connect with the team, I joined the #photos channel on WordPress Slack, introduced myself, and asked for advice on choosing subjects that would add variety to the directory. My initial impression is that the team combines written guidance, community discussions, and moderation to support contributors and maintain quality. As I continue, I would like to learn more about selecting useful subjects and improving my photographs.
